Day 6 - (08/15) Cheyenne, WY

We've spent the last few days in the land of "Dances With Wolves".

We drove 298 miles to Cheyenne today. The journey provided some interesting and challenging memories.

Interesting stuff: Remember all the billboards we saw on Day 4 (I-90W heading to Wall, SD)? Today offered a real change. We travelled over 150 miles in WY and saw no billboards. In addition there was a 81 mile section with no services. That's zero, nada, none of either.

Some history: The route included a stop at Ft. Laramie National Park. It's located at the confluence of the Platte and Laramie Rivers. We arrived just in time for a cannon demonstration. We learned how the firing team 4 members work together to get shots off every few minutes.

We toured some of the restored buildings, but had to cut things short due to a severe storm. Heavy rain, strong winds, thunder and lightning made for an interesting drive. We passed through the storm in about 30 minutes. We saw evidence of lots of hail along I-25S.
Another storm hit Cheyenne just as we arrived at the campground. Set up wasn't fun.

We've had some interesting weather so far. The temperature swing has been significant in the past few days ... from a high of 101° on Thursday to a low in Cheyenne tomorrow of 47°.

We leave for Estes Park tomorrow and will visit Stu Horowitz (Carol's brother-in-law) in Nederland. It may be time to get out the warm clothes.

  1. 81 miles with nothing? Do they warn you ahead of time, with a "last gas for 81 miles" kind of sign? $5 a gallon?

What fun you two must be having. It's fun to ride along from home.

  2. They did post a warning. They also had a sign saying if lights were flashing not to proceed because the road was closed somewhere ahead. We suspect it was to let folks know of snow closures in the winter or of flash floods in the summer.
