Day 4 - (08/13) Custer, SD

The inspection this morning revealed no damage from last night's storm. Our next door camper claims there was 1" hail at about 2am. We had no "dimples" in the skin. So, either we were fortunate or he was exaggerating (he's an avid fisherman).

At the suggestion of our neighbor, we took an unplanned trip back across the Missouri River to the Visitor Center at Chamberlain. We toured an exhibit there describing Lewis and Clark's river crossing at this point in 1804. They dried their supplies and made repairs at Oacoma (where we camped) ... pretty cool.

We made a 314 mile drive that took in Wall Drug and The Badlands NP. We're now camped at Big Pine Campground outside Custer, SD. Highlights follow:

Wall Drug - the trip on I-90W to Wall was uneventful, but quite funny. The highway is "littered" with billboards peddling things like dinosaur exhibits, Reptile Gardens, an 1880 Western Town, Native American Outlets, Chrystal Caverns, Big Thunder Gold Mine, Cosmos Mystery Area and Wall Drug. There must have been over a hundred Wall Drug ads. Though unbelievable, Wall Drug seemed to have everything they advertised in stock ... including a wedding chapel.

Badlands - it was hot (101° on the basin floor); the scenery was dramatic and harsh with almost no trees.

Campground - we're at over 5,000 ft elevation and about 20 miles from Mt. Rushmore. The temperature this evening is in the mid-60s. What a contrast to the heat of The Badlands!

We're staying here tomorrow and will take a driving tour of the sights around Mt. Rushmore.
