Day 5 - (08/14) Custer, SD

We awoke to gray overcast. Thinking it would clear, we set out on a tour of the area without the trailer.

First off was a drive-thru of Custer State Park. It included a number of overlook stops to view the scenery and to search for the buffalo herd that roams the park. It misted rain during most of the journey. We saw buffalo, prairie dogs, burros, mountain goats and mule deer. This part of the buffalo herd was on and beside the road.We then headed for the Wind Cave National Park. In 1903 Wind Cave became the 1st cave in the world to be designated a national park. It is the 6th longest cave in the world. It's a complex maze of interconnected caves. The known cave routes extend for 131 miles but fit under only 1 square mile of land. Our tour travelled 200 feet below the surface and covered 1/2 mile of tunnels. We don't think it rained while we were underground.

A steady rain didn't diminish the views of Mt. Rushmore. The four presidents' faces seemed to glow in the overcast.
We returned home via Iron Mountain Road. This 17 mile trip was very dramatic and slow. It had switch-backs, single lane tunnels, no berms and no guard rails. Dick really enjoyed the sightseeing ... Carol drove.
Today was a pretty wet day. We treated ourselves at The Purple Pie Place. The cherry and bumbleberry pies were great.
