We drove to Estes Park, entered Rocky Mountain National Park and took Old Fall River Road to the top of Trail Ridge Road. Carol said it would be fun (note: she wasn't driving). It’s a single-lane, dirt road that climbs constantly through switch-backs to over 11,000 ft elevation at the visitor’s center. Then we climbed on foot to the summit. We were quite winded when we ended at 12,005 ft elevation. Proof is provided below.
We came down to Estes Park via Trail Ridge Road. It’s paved and steep, but offers magnificent views.
We had an early dinner at Baldpate Inn. It’s an old inn that’s on the National Historic Registry. They began serving wonderful meals and collecting keys nearly 100 years ago. They’ve had notable guests from all over the world.
Funny Story: (from the “summit climb” mentioned above)
As we climbed, Stu began to tease Carol about running up the steps to the summit. Carol responded with a loud “Go Carol, Go!” A woman about five steps ahead of us (who had stopped to tie her shoe) stood and turned around with an expression of surprise and confusion. Her name was Carol also and she had been running up the steps. To make matters worse, we learned she was from Michigan. Oops.
Interesting Things:
- We saw unleaded regular gas at $2.949 at Estes Park.
