We started our Canyon de Chelly National Monument tour at the visitor center. A Navajo ranger made us some very good "cowboy coffee" and spent about 45 minutes sharing his life experiences in the canyon.
We then took the 34 mile round trip North Rim Drive ... stopping at Massacre Cave, Mummy Cave and Antelope House overlooks.
Approximately 30 Navajo families still farm the canyon floor

You must have a Navajo guide to go into the canyon. So, we took a 1/2 day guided tour in the afternoon. Keep in mind that we're in a 6-wheel drive truck and there was a flash flood in the canyon last night.
